If the coin is too thin, the edge will be damaged during stamping, and the factory will not be able to create the requested pattern.
For custom edges such as cross cut edge and oblique edge, which require additional cutting processes, the minimum thickness should be around 3.5mm. Otherwise, there will not be enough material for the cutting process.

While iron is much harder and does not have enough flexibility for these complex edge designs, making it unsuitable for custom coin edges.
Of course, brass is also a popular material choice. For custom coin edges that require cutting, brass can create a very unique visual effect.
Loot at this custom challenge coin with a silver plating on the surface. After the edge is cut with tools, the shiny brass underneath becomes exposed. This creates the feeling that the edge and the center part of the coin have two different plating colors, even though technically it is not a plating effect.
