Design Information

The Coast Guard Seal or Emblem and the motto “Semper Paratus” (Always Ready) are common features of Coast Guard challenge coins. The orange-and-blue Racing Stripe, adopted across Coast Guard assets in 1967, is another recognizable symbol.

For a distinctive shape, a center anchor cut-out can make the anchor part of the coin’s structure, with a shield or seal incorporated into it. Soft or hard enamel works well for the orange stripes, shield colors, and selected areas of a Rescue Swimmer badge. Antique silver or antique bronze plating with selective enamel is a popular combination, while two-tone plating offers another option. We also provide free laser engraving on the coin’s edge, where you can add vessel names, hull numbers, CPO entry years, or other relevant details.

For detailed designs: 2.5 inches or larger is recommended to keep text and other details clear and readable.

Can I customize or modify an existing coast guard challenge coin?

Yes. Custom Coast Guard challenge coins can be made to match your supplied artwork. We accept various file formats, including JPG, PNG, PSD, AI, and PDF. If you have an existing coin design you’d like to update, the text, colors, artwork, and other details can be adjusted to suit your needs. Our representative will work with you and our design team to confirm the changes, then provide a digital proof for your review. Unlimited revisions are included until you approve the design for production.

Standard production takes 7–14 days, while coins with complex 3D relief, spinner mechanisms, or other specialty designs may take 20–25 days. If you have a deadline for a ceremony, deployment, or other event, let us know in advance so we can prioritize your order and schedule production to meet your timeline. We recommend allowing 1–2 months for production and delivery to help keep your plans on schedule.

Coast guard challenge coins can be made in 2D or 3D, depending on the level of detail and relief you want. You can also choose shiny plating for a bright, polished look or antique plating for a more traditional appearance that emphasizes raised details. Enamel colors and clear epoxy coatings are available to suit your design.

Zinc alloy is a popular choice for custom coins. Brass and iron are also available, though thickness options are more limited. If you want something beyond a standard round coin, custom shapes such as shields, anchors, and cutter-inspired designs are possible.
