Choosing the Right Printing Method for Your Pin Design
Fine Details and Printing Size
For small details, silk screen printing is already surprisingly capable. Details down to 0.15 mm are possible, although we generally recommend at least 0.2 mm for more reliable results on small pins. If your artwork is extremely fine or contains complex image details, UV or offset printing may be a better fit.
Printing on Metal Edges
This is one area where silk screen printing has a clear advantage. It can be printed directly over enamel and even onto the metal edges of a pin. UV printing works differently: it needs a thin layer of enamel underneath, so it cannot be printed directly onto exposed metal.
Surface Finish and Durability
If you want the printed artwork to sit naturally on the pin, silk screen and UV printing both offer a very flat finish. Offset printing is slightly different because the artwork is printed onto a resin surface, leaving a raised layer that may yellow over time. Silk screen and UV printing do not have this resin layer and can remain stable for years.
Gradients and Complex Artwork
Both uv printing and offset printing are well suited to gradients, photographs, shadows, and other artwork with a lot of detail—things that are difficult to reproduce with silk screen printing. Look closely, though, and you may notice tiny printing dots from the machine process.
Combine Different Printing Methods
You don't always have to choose just one. A single custom pin can use UV printing for gradients or detailed artwork and silk screen printing for areas that need clean lines or printing on metal surfaces. Using each method where it works best can give you more control over the final design.

Can I put a photo on a pin?
Yes. UV printing and offset printing are both suitable for photo-based pin designs. They can reproduce photographs, gradients, shadows, and other complex details without simplifying the original artwork.
Because the printing process does not require each color or detail to be made separately, photo pins can also be a cost-effective option for commemorative designs, portraits, and detailed artwork.
Which file format is best for custom printed pins?
We can accept almost any file format. AI, PDF, and SVG files are ideal because they provide scalable vector artwork. High-resolution PNG and PSD files can also work well for complex designs and printed artwork.
If you only have a JPG file, you can still send it to us for review. As a general rule, the artwork should ideally be at least four times larger than the final printed size to ensure clear details.
Can printed pins reproduce exact colors from my artwork?
For UV printed pins and offset printed pins, the answer is YES. Both use digital printing technology with CMYK colors, allowing us to reproduce vibrant colors, fine details, gradients, and artwork that looks very close to the original design.
Silk screen printing can also meet most color requirements, but it works differently. Instead of CMYK, silk screen printing uses PMS colors. This means some colors in your original artwork may not have an exact PMS match, so we may need to select the closest available color for production. Once the production artwork is approved, the final pin can reproduce the colors very closely to the approved artwork proof.
